Bishop Gorman cruises in Tarkanian Classic opener

Bishop Gorman kicked off the second annual Tarkanian Classic with a 63-43 victory over Lynwood (Calif.) on Wednesday night.

The Gaels pulled ahead by double-digits early thanks to a nice balance of inside and outside play. On the inside, junior forwards Chase Jeter and Nick Blair provided back-to-back dunks, while on the perimeter, senior guards Obim Okeke and Noah Robotham drained back-to-back 3-pointers.

Gorman led 22-7 with 8:45 remaining in the first half and would never relinquish the lead.

The Knights pulled to within nine during the opening moments of the second half after a 3-pointer from senior guard Kevin Miller.

Gorman answered quickly, highlighted by a Blair block that led to a Robotham layup. Robotham then followed with a steal that led to a Blair dunk. A huge Stephen Zimmerman rebound slam capped a 10-3 Gorman run, and the Gaels’ lead hovered between15 to 20 points the rest of the night.

Zimmerman and Robotham led the way with 16 points, while Jeter added 15.

Bishop Gorman returns to the floor against Sacramento Sheldon at 3:20 on Thursday afternoon in Gorman’s main gym. Durango then takes on Oakland (Calif.) Bishop O’Dowd, featuring 6-foot-9 junior forward and UNLV recruit Ivan Rabb, while Clark battles defending tourney and California state Division I champion Santa Ana Mater Dei at 6 p.m. Prime Prep of Arlington, Texas, featuring the nation’s No. 1 guard prospect in Emmanuel Mudiay (SMU), faces Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.) at 8:40 p.m.
