For the second consecutive year, the defending Nevada Division I state football champion Bishop Gorman Gaels will host the prestigious Sollenberger Classic on Aug. 22-23 at Fertitta Field.
Named after Arizona high school sports historian Barry Sollenberger, the Sollenberger Classic annually pits two of Nevada’s and Arizona’s elite teams against each other during a two-day event.
The five-time defending state champion Gaels (13-2) will open up the event on Friday, Aug. 22, against Phoenix Brophy College Prep (5-7) while Northern Region powerhouse Reed will take on defending Arizona state champion Phoenix Mountain Pointe (14-0) the following day.
Reed, which has won the Northern Region championship three straight years, is just the second northern Nevada team to participate in the Sollenberger Classic during its nine years of existence.
The Sollenberger Classic match-ups were selected jointly by the Nevada and Arizona Interscholastic Activities Associations.
