The state of Nevada’s top defensive prospect for the Class of 2015 is headed to Notre Dame.
Bishop Gorman safety Nicco Fertitta tweeted out his commitment on Saturday afternoon during an unofficial visit to South Bend with his father, Lorenzo Fertitta, CEO and Co-Founder of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and co-founder of Station Casinos Inc.
Fertitta, a hard-hitting 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety, anchored a Gaels defense that won its fifth straight state title with a 49-14 thrashing of Reed High School of Sparks in the championship game.
National recruiting guru Tom Lemming of the CBS Sports Network’s Lemming Report ranked Fertitta as one of the state’s top three prospects along with Bishop Gorman tight end Alize Jones and wide receiver Cordell Broadus, son of famed rap star Snoop Dogg.
“He’s a heady player with great instincts,” Lemming said. “He’s always in the right place at the right time, can turn his hips and hits like a 220-pounder. He can really hit you. He’s one of the top three prospects in the state and one of the top 300 juniors in the nation.”
Fertitta also took unofficial visits to Arizona and Boston College, where he witnessed the coming out party of 2014 Heisman Trophy winner Famous Jameis Winston when the Seminoles rallied for a 48-34 win over the Eagles last September.
Fertitta also had offers from Utah, Indiana, San Diego State, Hawaii, Houston, Villanova and UNLV, which finally got around to offering earlier this week.
