The UNLV Lady Rebels, whose second place finish was their highest-ever in Mountain West play, had a school-record four players named to the all-Mountain West women’s basketball teams released on Monday.
Leading the way was 6-foot-3 senior forward Lenita Sanford who became the first Lady Rebel in five years to garner first team all-Mountain West honors. Sanford, who earned four MW Player of the Week awards while averaging 10.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game, was all selected to the All-Defensive team along with teammate Mia Bell.
Junior guard Kelli Thompson, who led the Lady Rebels in scoring (13.6 ppg) and ranked in the top six in the Mountain West in both assists (3.2 apg) and steals (1.8), was selected to the second team while Bell, who had three game-winning shots this season, and senior forward Jamie Smith, one of only two players in league history to reach 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their career, were third team picks.
San Diego State’s Courtney Clements was named Player of the Year while Lady Aztecs coach Beth Burns earned Coach of the Year honors.
No. 2 seed UNLV (22-8) opens Mountain West Tournament action on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. against No. 7 seed New Mexico (9-19) at the Thomas & Mack Center.
