UNLV will have its fourth different starting quarterback over a seven-game span when it opens its 2012 season on Aug. 30 against Minnesota at Sam Boyd Stadium.
Redshirt freshman Nick Sherry as expected was named the starter on Monday by head coach Bobby Hauck over junior Caleb Herring, who started eight games in 2011. Senior Sean Reilly, who started two games last season, is listed third on the depth chart while sophomore Taylor Barnhill, who started a 56-9 loss at TCU in last season’s finale, has moved to linebacker.
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound Sherry will become just the third quarterback in UNLV history to start a season-opening game, joining Travis Dixon (2007 at Utah State) and Jon Denton (1996 at Tennessee).
“Nick had a nice second half of spring ball and a really good training camp,” Hauck said. “We just felt like he gave us the best chance to be competitive against Minnesota, so we’ll start him next week.”
Sherry, who originally committed to Colorado out of Casa Grande High School in Petaluma, Calif., was rated the nation’s No. 86 quarterback prospect by Scouts, Inc.
