Rebels land highly decorated DE Gabe McCoy

UNLV football picked up a verbal commitment from one of the top defensive players in northern California over the weekend when Pittsburg High School’s Gabe McCoy picked the Rebels.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound McCoy is an explosive pass rusher who had 17.5 sacks and 25 tackles for loss for the Pirates (10-3), who lost to eventual California Open Division champion Concord De La Salle (14-0) in the CIF North Coast Section championship game.

McCoy was a first team All-Metro pick by the San Francisco Chronicle and also selected first team All-East Bay by the Contra Costa Times. MaxPreps.com selected him to its second team All-Northern California and all-California Division I squad. He also was named the North Coast Section Defensive Player of the Year by Cal-Hi Sports.

The national letter of intent signing period begins on Feb. 4.
