The Mountain West released its preseason all-conference football team and media poll this morning as part of the league’s annual Media Days at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.
For UNLV fans, there wasn’t a whole lot to shout about.
Not one Rebel was picked to the 25-man preseason all-conference team. And UNLV was tabbed to finish ninth in the revamped 10-team Mountain West ahead of only New Mexico.
As expected, Boise State (27 first place votes, 296 overall points), which will depart for the Big East following the 2012 campaign, was the clear cut choice to finish first followed by conference newcomers Nevada (244) and Fresno State (2, 231).
Wyoming (213), San Diego State (1, 173), Air Force (170), Hawaii (116) and Colorado State (111) also were picked to finish ahead of the Rebels (63) with the Lobos (33) bringing up the rear.
Fresno State junior quarterback Derek Carr, who threw for 3,544 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, was named the preseason Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year while San Diego State cornerback Leon McFadden, who ranked 12th nationally with 17 passes defended in 2011, was selected Defensive Player of the Year. Boise State senior return specialist Mitch Burroughs, who ranked eighth nationally in punt returns (13.3 avg.) a year ago, was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Year.
