Birch repeats as Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year

UNLV forward Khem Birch, who tied a league record with 69 blocks in conference play, was named the Mountain West Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season today.

The 6-foot-9 junior from Montreal is just the third player in league history to earn back-to-back Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year honors, joining former Rebel Marcus Banks (2001-03) and Wyoming’s Justin Williams (2004-06).

Birch, who also averaged 11.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, was also a second team all-Mountain West pick. UNLV guard Bryce Dejean-Jones garnered third team honors while forward Roscoe Smith earned honorable mention recognition.

San Diego State guard Xavier Thames was named conference Player of the Year while Aztecs coach Steve Fisher was named Coach of the Year. San Diego State forward Josh Davis took home Newcomer of the Year honors while forward Dwayne Polee II was named Sixth Man of the Year. Fresno State swingman Paul Watson was named Freshman of the Year.
