Citing the desire to be closer to his ailing grandmother, UNLV backup point guard Reggie Smith was granted his release on Monday.
The sophomore, who transferred to UNLV from Marquette following the Fall semester in 2010, averaged 2.5 points in 20 games for the Runnin’ Rebels during the 2011-12 season.
“I enjoyed my time at UNLV,” Smith said in a statement released by UNLV. “However, my grandmother is really sick and I have decided to find a school closer to home so I can be near her and my family.”
Smith’s departure means UNLV now has two scholarships available.
“I understand him wanting to be closer to home and wish him and his family the best,” UNLV coach Dave Rice said.
