UNLV’s first road game of the season had a few potholes but in the end the Runnin’ Rebels used a late 9-0 run to pull away for an 89-81 victory over Southern Utah on Wednesday night at Centrum Arena in Cedar City, Utah.
Junior forward Dwayne Morgan scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds for his third career double-double to lead the Runnin’ Rebels (5-2). Junior guard Jovan Mooring finished with 16 points and five assists while sophomore guard Kris Clyburn added 15 points, including 3-of-3 3-pointers, and senior forward Tyrell Green (12 points, nine rebounds) just missed a double-double for UNLV.
The Runnin’ Rebels jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first 4½ minutes but Southern Utah (2-5), coached by former UNLV interim head coach Todd Simon, closed to within 40-34 at halftime and trailed just 77-75 after a 3-pointer by guard Race Parsons (15 points, 4-of-6 3-pointers) with 3:09 to go.
After the Thunderbirds missed a chance to tie it on a drive by guard Decardo Day, Mooring hit a 3-pointer to trigger the 9-0 run and the Runnin’ Rebels were never seriously threatened in the final seconds.
UNLV shot a season-high 59.6 percent from the floor, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range, and outrebounded the T-Birds, 38-26, en route to an 8-0 edge in second chance points.
The Runnin’ Rebels return to action on Saturday night when travel to Arizona State (4-3).
