CEDAR CITY, Utah – Roscoe Smith had his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds and UNLV got back to the .500 mark by cruising past Southern Utah, 73-51, Saturday afternoon at Centrum Arena here.
Jelan Kendrick also scored 12 points and had three steals for the Runnin’ Rebels (4-4) while Bryce Dejean-Jones and Kevin Olekaibe each finished with 11 points.
Center Jaren Jeffrey and guard Trey Kennedy each scored 10 points for Southern Utah (1-6), which shot just 31.6 percent from the floor, including 2-of-15 from 3-point range.
UNLV trailed just once in the game, 7-6, after a layup by Cal Hanks with 14:13 left in the first half. But Olekaibe started an 8-0 spurt with a layup off a Deville Smith pass and UNLV pulled away to a 38-23 halftime lead.
The Rebels quickly extended the lead to 20 points, 50-30, on a layup by Dejean-Jones early in the second half and Southern Utah never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
UNLV also got big games from freshman forward Christian Wood (nine points, 3-of-4 3-pointers) and Khem Birch, who had seven points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Rebels return to action on Wednesday when they host Radford (6-2) at 7 p.m..
