Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian spent Tuesday night in MountainView Hospital after suffering a mild heart attack during a doctor’s visit earlier in the day.
Tarkanian, 81, who had been dealing with bronchitis, started to wheeze during a visit to his doctor’s office earlier Tuesday and was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. An EKG test showed that he was experiencing a mild heart attack although he was not experiencing any chest pains or other symptoms.
“It was a mild heart attack,” his son and former Rebel point guard Danny Tarkanian told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “He said he feels pretty good, but he was scared.”
Tarkanian compiled a 509-105 record at UNLV from 1973 to 1992 and coached the school to four Final Four appearances, including 1990 when the Runnin’ Rebels won the school’s only national championship. Current UNLV head coach Dave Rice and assistant Stacey Augmon were both members of that squad.
Surgery is unlikely for Tarkanian who could be released as early as today.
