NAME: Nicholas Maruri
CLASS: Sophomore
SPORT: Golf
THE SKINNY: The 6-foot-2 sophomore from Mexico City, Mexico, a product of Monteverde Academy in Montverde, Fla., helped lead Dwaine Knight’s men’s golf team to its third tournament title in four fall events as the 13th-ranked Rebels claimed the 54-hole Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M., on Oct. 24-25. Maruri shot a 11-under 202 to finish third in the tourney, the top performance by any Rebel.
KEY STATS: Maruri fired a final round 1-under 70 to help UNLV (34-under 818) to an eight stroke victory over Wichita State (26-under 826). He finished two strokes ahead of another UNLV star, Derek Ernst, who took fourth (9-under 204).
