The first key July basketball evaluation period begins today which means a lot of time spent in airports, rental cars and stuffy gyms for UNLV head coach Dave Rice and his staff.
Rice is in Indianapolis today for the start of the adidas Invitational. That tournament includes a Dream Vision squad that features two of the top prospects for the Class of 2015 in 6-foot-11 Bishop Gorman center Stephen Zimmerman, recently rated No. 1 in that class by Scout.com, and 6-8 Chase Jeter, son of former UNLV star Chris Jeter, who also plays for the Gaels.
The Rebels have two scholarships available for the Class of 2014 and one of those has already been gobbled up by 5-star wing forward Dwayne Morgan of St. Frances Academy in Baltimore. So Rice and his staff will spend much of the month focusing on top prospects like Zimmerman and Jeter from the Class of 2015 when UNLV will have at least a handful of scholarships to hand out.
“Certainly 2014 will be a big class because that’s the next one,” Rice said. “But 2015 is huge. Just the way our class breaks down, that group of juniors to be is extremely important.”
Rice talks about his busy month and also the impact of having former Runnin’ Rebel Anthony Bennett picked No. 1 overall in last month’s NBA Draft on recruiting in the video below.
